The main aim of the School of Linguistics and Literary Studies (LLS) is to offer courses related to language learning, literature, literary criticism and linguistics. The School lays equal emphasis on all aspects of the Sanskrit language and aims to endow students with linguistic competence, aesthetic sensibilities as well as philological skills. This is reflected in the courses offered by the School. The School also anchors English proficiency courses. In addition, LLS offers interdisciplinary courses in the areas of Computational Linguistics, Psycholinguistics, Cognitive Linguistics, Natural Language Processing, Philosophy of Art, Scientific Literature, Writing for Media and Media Adaptation.
The School of Linguistics and Literary studies aims to equip students with a strong grasp over Sanskrit as a language, and to prepare them for careers in teaching, research or popular dissemination of advanced ideas in areas such as Sanskrit literature, poetics, aesthetics and linguistics.
Programmes Offered
1. B.A. Sanskrit
The Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Sanskrit is a popular programme across all universities, not only in India, but also abroad. The unique feature of this programme is that it gives a detailed introduction to various disciplines of Sanskrit. lt places special emphasis on three streams viz. Vyākaraṇa, Advaita Vedānta and Sāhitya. Apart from Sanskrit, the students will be able to secure knowledge of other streams such as Linguistics, Finance, Management, Governance, Psychology and Leadership, by opting for the Generic Elective courses offered in these areas.
2. M.A. Sanskrit
The Master of Arts (M.A.) in Sanskrit is an innovative programme that aims to upgrade the conventional postgraduate courses in Sanskrit and Sanskrit studies by offering traditional śāstraic topics along with their contemporary counterparts. The emphasis of the M.A. programme enables students to be equally comfortable in the role of the pundit and the modern academician. The courses are taught with particular attention to demonstrating the continuities as well as differences between traditional and current disciplines, to give students a realistic understanding of the relevance of ancient knowledge.
