This course focuses on the non-profit sector in India. It centres around the three areas that are the foundations of this sector: NGOs, Philanthropy & Voluntary action.
A Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) is a private organization that pursues activities to relieve suffering, promote the interests of the poor, protect the environment, provide basic social services or undertake community development (The World Bank).
Philanthropy has a very long tradition in India. All practicing religions embody the idea of philanthropy and the concept of “daan” works across religions and cultures.
Volunteers are an important part of the labour requirements of NGOs. Volunteers in the non-profit sector represent 0.8% of the economically active population. This number is even greater than that of the paid labour force in this sector, which represents 0.6 % of the economically active population
