World Mental Health Day 2022

World Mental Health Day was observed by the School of Philosophy, Psychology and Scientific Heritage (PPSH) of Chinmaya Vishwa Vidyapeeth on 10 October 2022. The purpose of the three-hour-long programme was to raise awareness about mental health in the university community.

The students of the BSc and MSc Applied Psychology programmes showed great initiative and drive in the days leading up to the event, taking up various organisational responsibilities under the guidance of Ms. Gayathri Suresh Babu, Faculty in-charge

The programme started at 9.30 am, with an invocation by Swasthika Suresh (First year, MSc Applied Psychology). Dr. Satheesh Varma M. (Head, School of PPSH), welcomed the guests Ms. Resmi Sateesha who is a playback singer predominantly known for her songs in Malayalam,  and Dr. Marikutty P. J. a clinical psychologist and Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology, Union Christian College, Aluva. Prof. Ajay Kapoor (hon’ble Vice Chancellor) presided over the programme and addressed the audience. This was followed by the inauguration of the event by the chief guest Ms. Resmi Sateesh. In her address, she shared her views on psychology as an applied subject, how ‘mental health is a luxury today and why we should work towards changing that’. She also sang a song after explaining how the lyrics were applicable in the context of mental health. Next, Dr. Marikutty gave the keynote address, highlighting the importance of mental health awareness. This was followed by the vote of thanks proposed by the student representative, Aniruddh Sharma (second year, MSc Applied Psychology).

After a short break, the event recommenced with Marikutty ma’am’s session on Mental Health First Aid going with the 2022 World Mental Health Day theme ‘Make Mental Health and Well-Being for All a Global Priority’. She shed light on why psychological first aid is essential, when and where it should be administered and spoke in detail about the steps involved in administering it. Her use of relatable examples and the simple explanation of technical terms reflected her expertise and knowledge. After a round of questions and answers, Advaitha Satheesh (First year, BSc (Hons.) Applied Psychology), the student coordinator for the event, gave the Vote of Thanks, expressing gratitude towards the dignitaries for gracing the occasion, as well as the faculty, student coordinators, volunteers, technical team and everybody who came together to make the event a success.
