The theme for Day 3 of the NFSI 2019 was ‘Consciousness and Well-being’. The keynote address was delivered by Prof. Narayanan Srinivasan, Centre of Behavioural and Cognitive Sciences, University of Allahabad on the topic ‘Experience of Time’.

Prof. Srinivasan began by elucidating how every experience of time we have is embedded in a subjective timeline. He presented three ways of measuring the experience of time, namely verbal estimation, reproduction, and bisection. He further said attention, intention, self-association and predictability are the conceptual factors which influence our perception of time.

He then moved on to the experience of consciousness in time. Through his exposition, he highlighted two main standpoints – Consciousness with content and Consciousness without content. In the former view, the ARAS Model of Metzinger supports the theory that Consciousness cannot be devoid of content and that any such experience is nothing but an illusion. This is along the lines of what the Nyaya school of philosophy argues. However, Advaita Philosophy disagrees with this viewpoint stating that Consciousness is ‘contentless’ and continues in nature. He stated that both hypotheses need to be substantiated through empirical research to gain further clarity.

After an engaging question and answer session, Prof. Narayanan Srinivasan was felicitated by Prof. Gauri Mahulikar, marking the end of the final keynote address at the NFSI 2019.
