International Mother Language Day

International Mother Language Day (21st February) was celebrated at CVV on 20th February 2020 between 4 p.m. and 5.30 p.m. at Chinmayam. As a prelude to the event, students displayed the menu at Annakshetra in multiple languages. Students also displayed posters and decorated the Saraswati mandapam. As this year’s theme is “Languages without borders”, the programme began with a rendition of “Maitrīm bhajata” by Sruthilaya of second-year B.Com. A short film on the history of the day was screened. Following the short film, a few students spoke about their mother language. This was followed by “Lightning Translations”, an activity in which six volunteers had to quickly translate into English the sentences they were given in another language. After this fun activity, the audience actively participated in a quiz on languages conducted by Prof. Saurabh Singanapalli.

The fun and learning continued with the faculty members presenting a nursery rhyme composed of words in different languages. This idea was initiated by Dr. Ramakrishna Pejathaya. This was followed by an activity where the audience had to learn and present a nursery rhyme in a language, other than their mother language. Finally, the audience was invited to play “Light Me if You Can”. CVV students Rajesh Kumar and Aditya Anshuman had devised a board, wherein the audience had to match words from different languages and make the bulb glow. The programme ended with a vote of thanks by Dr. Vishaka Venkat.
