Dr. Vinayak Rajat Bhat (Assistant Professor and Head, School of Vedic Knowledge Systems) had the wonderful opportunity to interview Padma Vibhushan Dr. M. S. Valiathan on 03 February 2021. The theme for the interview was ‘Ācāṛya Suśruta—Testimony to Ancient India's Achievement in Surgery’.
Dr. M. S. Valiahan is a well-known cardiac surgeon who has made original contributions to cardiology and the development of medical technology. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons, ex-President of the Indian National Science Academy, National Research Professor of the Government of India, the first Vice Chancellor of the Manipal University and so on. He has been honoured with numerous awards, fellowships, and honorary doctorates in India and abroad for his contributions to medical science and technology.
He believes Ayurveda is not only the mother of medicine but also of all life sciences in India. He has pioneered several scientific studies in the field of Ayurveda and authored numerous books on the subject such as Legacy of Susruta and Legacy of Charaka. In this interview, Dr. Valiathan talks about evidence of anatomy in Vedic literature, anaesthetics and plastic surgery in earlier times and so on. The interview is both fascinating and an eye-opener!
