Carnatic Vocal Intermediate – An Online Workshop

A three-month-long online workshop on ‘Sangeeta Pallava 2 – Carnatic Vocal Intermediate’ was held from 05 April to 26 June 2021. Dr Prabhavathy P. N. (Assistant Professor, School of Kalayoga) covered the theoretical and practical aspects for the learners of Carnatic music at the intermediate level.

Two adi tala varnams in ragas Bahudhari and Saranga, one ata tala varnam in raga Sankarabharanam, two compositions of Muttuswami Dikshitar, one composition of Bharatiyar, one Andal tiruppavai and a Nottuswaram were taught.

Dr. L. Sampath Kumar (Assistant Professor and Head, School of Linguistics & Literary Studies) was invited to conduct a session explaining the meaning of the Sanskrit and Tamil songs.

A continuous evaluation pattern was followed ending with an examination of singing and theory. Certification in this course makes the participants eligible for the next level of training. The workshop was well accepted by the students, who expressed a keen desire to attend the next workshop in this series.
