Prabhavathy was born to a family of artistic lineage and started training in the Carnatic Vocal tradition at a young age. She then moved to Chennai where she was a disciple of Guru Smt. Suguna Varadachari and Sri T M Krishna. She engaged in academics in music at the Madras Music Academy and then did Masters in Indian Music from the University of Madras. Even while continuing academics she started establishing herself as a prolific performer in various venues across the country and abroad. She pursued her M Phil and finished with the First rank from Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kalady, where she went on to do her Ph.D. as well. The research topic was a study on the Raga Saveri, tracing its history and evolution into its current form, its application in some forms of theatre, etc. Prabhavathy is active in the domain of concerts and mentorship. She has worked at Kerala Kalamandalam Deemed University & Unnayi Warrier Smaraka Kalanilayam (Kerala Government-funded center for reviving Kathakali). She continues to do Performance, workshops, and lectures on Music.
