Description

This workshop on Carnatic Vocal Basics for students aged 12 and above is aimed at enhancing the learning horizon of students who have familiarised themselves with the Saptaswaras, Saralivarisais etc. The next level of practice techniques in the Varisais and Alankaras will be introduced along with new rhythm techniques. Four ragas will be familiarised with simple Abhyasa Ganas and compositions.

Workshop Structure

Duration

  • Classes on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.
  • Each class will be of 2-hour duration, alternating between live sessions, recorded sessions and online listening material.

Workshop Objectives

This workshop aims to:

  • Introduce exercises to get control over rendering notes/combinations.
  • Familiarise even and uneven beat rhythms.
  • Introduce musical forms like Jatiswarams.
  • Learn the basics of a few Ragas.

Workshop Outcomes

At the end of this workshop, students will:

  • be conversant with the basic terminology and concepts of music.
  • be able to sing Varisais like Janta and Dhattu.
  • be able to sing simple compositions.
  • be able to sing Alankaras in Talams like Ekam, Rupakam, Tisra Triputa, Dhruvam and Misra Jhampa.
  • be able to sing some Alankaras in Ragas like Mohanam and Hamsadhwani.
  • be able to practice Alankaras off beat.
  • be able to sing a song of Oothukkad Venkata Subbaiyyar in folk style.
  • know how to use the ancient Katapayaadi technique of numerical coding in day-to-day life.
  • be able to discuss the life and work of the Musical Trinity.

Pedagogy

The methodology of instruction in this workshop is as follows:

  • Sadhakam (exercises) during tutorials to enhance singing and rhythm.
  • Theory sessions to understand concepts, terminology and information relevant to students of music.
  • E teaching/Video content etc. will be used wherever possible.
